USA Flag

I guess you could classify Bristol as a patriotic town.
(How else would you explain the red, white and blue line separating traffic in the center of the road?)

Located on a peninsula between Narragansett and Mount Hope Bays, Bristol is about 12 miles southeast of Providence and 12 miles north of Newport. With a population of 22,000, Bristol is easily accessible from Route 114 or Route 136 via Route 195, and from the Mount Hope Bridge via Route 24.

Bristol was the site of the first battle of King Philip's war in 1675.
This was the rebellion by Wampanoag Indians against settlers who bought land from King Philip's late father, Sachem Massasoit. Philip was defeated but his Indian name, Metacom, has been given to one of Bristol's main roads. King Philip made Mount Hope his headquarters. The rocky ledge known as "King Philip's chair" where he watched for enemy ships on Mount Hope Bay is still a popular visitors' location today. As a result of the war, Plymouth Colony in Massachusetts retained Bristol lands until finally releasing them in 1747.

Visitors enter the grounds through the Rose Garden where 100 year old climbing roses grow on the fence that encloses the garden. Original shrub roses grow along side the newer David Austin hybrids. The century old Chestnut Rose, Rosa roxburghii dominates the garden especially when covered with thousands of single pink blossoms in early June. Passing through the moon gate in the Rose Garden to the rest of the property affords the visitor a first glimpse of the Great Lawn and Narragansett Bay.

Open year round, the park offers four miles of bicycle trails passing along the Bay and through 464 acres of groomed fruit trees, carefully nurtured flowering bushes, and manicured lawns. Rich in history, it proudly displays its popular open air Chapel-By-The-Sea, ten large playfields, and six picnic groves containing 400+ picnic tables.

Welcome to Linden Place Museum!

In 1810, General George DeWolf, the most flamboyant member of the seafaring DeWolf Family of Rhode Island, commissioned architect Russel Warren to build a mansion which would become the centerpiece for the historic town of Bristol, Rhode Island. That vision was realized and Linden Place has become a central presence in the heart of town.
